The Flipper

"The Quick and Easy Tool Post Changer for the Taig Lathe"

Jim Lewis, the owner of emachineshop.com, recently sent me his new accessory for the Taig lathe. It is an aftermarket lever and bolt that replaces the stock Taig socket head screw. The kit has parts to make 4 levers, and is quick to assemble and adjust. Details and pricing are available on the Flipper page of emachineshop.com. It is also available for the Sherline lathe.

The "Flipper" as received. There are parts for four replacement toolpost clamp screws. The lever parts are stamped aluminum, and the rest of the hardware is steel.
After some head scratching, I determined that the way to assemble is to basically sandwich the head of the bolt between two non-hex ends of the lever parts, with two hex ends capturing the hex on the end of the bolt.
The parts are then screwed together and a stack of washers is used to make the screw the correct length for clamping, as well as to provide clearance for using the lever
You can rotate the square nut 90 degrees to align the "Flipper" correctly. You may need to disassemble the lever once clamped, rotate it and reassemble to get the optimum configuration for the "Flipper".

Once adjusted the "Flipper" works quite well. The toolpost can now be clamped or unclamped by simply rotating the lever a short amount.

The cost is $29.95 for parts to make 4 levers, or about $7.50 a lever. While this is not cheap, it will save time fumbling around for the allen wrench, and make repetitive toolpost changing much faster.

The quality of the stamped parts is quite good, and all the hardware is good quality as well.

While personally I would tend to make my own levers, if you don't have the time or inclination to spend hours making a lever, the "Flipper" would be a good, quick way to up your productivity when using the Taig.
