I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for books on jig and fixture work, I must have a dozen on my shelf. Over my years of machining I have learned that jig and fixture work is probably at least half of the battle in making any part, and a good understanding of the basic principles behind jigs and fixtures is essential. As time goes on new methods, products and theories have arisen about part fixturing, in many cases replacing older methods and increasing efficiency.

The first part of the book, Introduction to Setup Reduction, explains the principles and practice of both designing a part so that it can be efficiently produced, and the construction of fixtures with simplicity, speed and cost in mind. While a basic Jig & Fixture design book is still needed (like Hoffman's Jig and Fixture Design ), this section also contains an overview of the mechanics of fixturing.

The second part, Setup Reduction Techniques, is a series of pages, each headed: "Description of the Problem/Requirement" and showing an existing setup on one half, and the improved method on the other. This second, longer half is the real meat of the book, and perusing the various solutions will enable you to apply the improvements in your own work. Page headings such as: "Avoid locational inaccuracies with "V"-type locators", "Design a device to prevent the workpiece from being loaded upside down in the workholder", "Design a fast-acting device to clamp workholder elements together" and "Design a simplified method to machine a larger eccentric workpiece" contain all sorts of useful tips for the design of workholder elements. The book does suggest manufactured components where applicable, functioning as an expanded catalog of the devices now available. The section "Techniques for Vises" is possibly the most exhaustive treatment of special jaws and modifications to vises I have ever seen in print.

If you use jigs and fixtures, or are designing parts for production, this book will be of great utility.
